Project Description

After much research, community outreach and consultation, the newly developed Everyman reopened its doors in 2014 with a state of the art 400 seat theatre. A new auditorium, over-stage technical bridges and audience gallery have greatly enhanced production values, with increased seating, staging and rigging flexibility. Its iconic design has won many plaudits and culminated in winning the prestigious Stirling Prize in 2014.

Part of the remit included a new foyer and bistro spaces, a ‘Theatre and Community’ studio, a writer's study, meeting rooms and function rooms. New back of house and support facilities include a scenic workshop, rehearsal room with recording suite, dressing rooms, administration areas and storage space.

Mastercraft's involvement:
Formwork
Mastercraft Construction successfully bid for the formwork package using the knowledge and expertise accumulated from previous projects, such as the Lyric Theatre.

The concrete frame and basement package included all structural waterproofing, reinforcing bar, formwork and placing of concrete over several levels. Built over varying floor levels there were a multitude of concrete finishes used. These included: 'Plain Smooth', 'Off the Panel', 'Fine Smooth' and 'Boardmarked'

Challenges arose from the theatre's complex design and its location on a compact city centre site. Utilising their vast experience in specialised formwork, our project team were easily able to overcome these restraints, much to the satisfaction of the client and designers.

Joinery
Working in tandem with their highly skilled workforce, the team were more than up to the task of fitting the bespoke joinery elements required on such a prestigious project. Examples of joinery items completed by Mastercraft Construction include the following:

  • The supply and fit of Birch and Maritime plywoods. These were used as an exposed finish on various walls and ceilings throughout the building.
  • The fitting of doors and ironmongery, including bespoke sliding doors in the Bar/Bistro and Meeting room.
  • The supply and fitting of hardwood handrails, cappings and nosings within the auditorium
  • The stage floor was also installed by the firm.
